Aliran statement

Avoid weaponising the term Islamophobia to silence genuine concerns https://m.aliran.com/media-statements/avoid-weaponising-the-term-islamophobia-to-silence-genuine-concerns ... Avoid weaponising the term Islamophobia to silence genuine concerns. Accusing those expressing concerns over the Mufti Bill of being 'Islamophobic' is akin to labelling critics of the Zionist regime as 'antisemitic'. Aliran welcomes Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's recent call for a "healthy and constructive dialogue" on the controversial Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill 2024, which will be tabled in the current parliamentary session. This is because certain quarters have expressed deep concern over the perceived undemocratic and unconstitutional character of the bill. It would be counterproductive to push through a bill that has sparked controversy and unease among Muslims and others. We need serious conversations to help clarify the contentious provisions of the bill...

New Year wish

New Year wish: A PM for all Malaysians -- Mariam Mokhtar in Malaysiakini. Dec 27, 2024 https://www.malaysiakini.com/columns/729995 COMMENT | My New Year wish is for Malaysia to be ruled by a prime minister for all Malaysians, and not just a PM for the Malays. The longest-serving former PM who became our PM for a second time was merely a seat warmer for the man who was desperate to be PM, Anwar Ibrahim. Having tasted power once again, Dr Mahathir Mohamad refused to step down and was instead ousted in a political coup. However, his replacement was a man who proudly boasted that he was "Malay first". He was ineffective and when he resigned, another Malay who reluctantly took his place, was fortunately our shortest serving PM. As PM, Mahathir knew what he wanted and even told the Malays that he knew what they wanted, even though many of them did not know it at the time. He sowed the seeds of division, reinforced affirmative action policies, and the problems of i...

Malaysia’s obsession with race and religion: a never-ending tragedy

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/opinion/2024/12/26/malaysias-obsession-with-race-and-religion-a-never-ending-tragedy/ Letter to the Editor - 26 Dec 2024, 08:45 AM Such preoccupation is more than just a distraction—it's a prison that locks the nation into an endless cycle of blame and mediocrity. 109 SHARES Total Views: 12,411 From Adnan D More than six decades after independence, Malaysia remains ensnared in a toxic web of race and religion. This isn't progress; it's stagnation. No statesman has emerged to lead the nation beyond these divisive shackles. Instead, we're stuck with a carousel of politicians recycling the same tired rhetoric, pandering to fears and prejudices to maintain their grip on power. It's exhausting, infuriating, and ultimately pathetic. Race, race, race—the drumbeat of the national narrative. As a brown-skinned Malaysian with both Hindu and Muslim ancestry, I've lived the divisiveness this obsession ...

Racism rears it’s ugly head in Malaysia

https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10162406767770842&set=a.10152601924435842 James Chin 12 December 2024 I do not mean to disagree with TDM, but I would ask rational people to consider the following facts: 1) TDM was Prime Minister for 23 years. If the Malays are weak now, isn't it because he didn't establish the groundwork and foundation for them? Why is he blaming the enemy of the Malays (while he did not state so, history suggests he meant the Chinese)? 2) Malays completely dominate all of the state's important institutions, including the royals, police, armed forces, civil service, and parliament. Since Merdeka, no non-Malay/non-Muslim Prime Minister or Deputy Prime Minister has been appointed. Since Merdeka, the Malays have held an absolute cabinet majority. So, if Malays are losing power, isn't it because the Malays appointed to all these institutions didn't perform their part in upholding ketuanan melayu? The Chinese were never near power so ...
