Incompetence or sinister agenda over new Islamic material for schools?

Incompetence or sinister agenda over new Islamic material for schools? (To many of our Muslim brothers and sisters, especially those in positions of power, Islam is not about duty to God through love and compassion but about earning credit, rituals and "winning".) by Adzhar Ibrahim, FMT ------------------------ The latest instance of ruffled feathers in national politics is about the supposed implementation of new materials into the school curriculum. Said material is very Islamic in nature, supposedly a book about some of the sayings and traditions of Prophet Muhammad. Apparently it wasn't explained properly that the material was meant only for Muslim students. That fact and explanation came out after the proverbial "stuff" had hit the proverbial fan. Well and good then. It's the ministry's job to decide what curriculum materials are planned and implemented, all the while honouring our multiracial and multireligious society. You mig...

Rescind the somgkok

Rescind the "songkok" rule and respect those who don't feel comfortable to wear it ----------------------------- The enforcement of a directive issued by the Penang State Secretary Datuk Sayuthi Bakar that every male attending official State Government functions must wear a songkok is a very subtle way of introducing an Islamic dress code on non-Muslims. This is because the "songkok" is indisputably a head gear associated with religion as Muslims wear it when attending prayers or other religious functions. Wearing headgear at official functions has not been an issue in the past and for sure everyone attending official functions was properly dressed for the occasion. What is the logic for wanting everyone in the official functions to look alike as if there were no people of other faiths and cultures in the audience? This is a nation that on the one hand we tell the whole world about as a melting pot of ethnicities and cultures, and advertise it as such...

When the PM plays the role of a priest

When the PM plays the role of a priest by Tamil Maran • Religion has become a sensitive issue all over the world, especially when people get converted into another religion. Everybody has the right to follow any religion they wish, but what happened on Friday at a mosque, where the prime minister led the process of an individual converting to Islam, is not proper. There are many ulama and Muslim religious leaders who can do the conversion process. The prime minister, being the leader of all Malaysians, should have left it to the authorities or personnel in charge to do the procedure. The question is, why did he get involved in the procedure? Was he not advised correctly by his advisers on the pros and cons of the effects on the Malaysian public? This is the first time a sitting prime minister has become involved in conversion proceedings. Anwar Ibrahim should know he is the prime minister for all, and the non-Muslims Malaysians should not perceive it in a negative ...

We did not form Malaysia in 1963 to benefit a single race.

We did not form Malaysia in 1963 to benefit a single race. We should strongly condemn the recent statement made by a coalition of Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Selangor and Negri Sembilan, calling for the establishment of a Malay Muslim government without other parties that represents other races. This statement is not only divisive but also goes against the principles of equality, multiculturalism, and democracy enshrined in the Federal Constitution. The call to exclude a political party based on race and religion is discriminatory and undermines the spirit of unity and harmony that Malaysia aspires to achieve. It is essential to recognize that the Parliament should represent all Malaysians, regardless of their race or religion, and not be limited to any particular group. We urge the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this statement by the Muslim NGOs for any potential seditious and treasonous elements. Such remarks that defy the concept of Malaysia as st...

Stop dividing us further

Stop Dividing Us Further The state elections which saw so much race and religious rhetorics played out, was perceived as one of the most toxic election in the history of Malaysia. Thankfully, it has concluded with state governments formed in Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Penang with Selangor and Negri Sembilan to follow soon. Ironically, the race and religious rhetorics has taken another twist with Penang seeing an intra-race confusion for the Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) II post, who is theoretically supposed to represent the interest of Malaysians from the Indian community. 3-term assemblyman, YB Tuan Jagdeep Singh Deo has just taken oath as a state executive councillor and also DCM II when the outgoing DCM II Prof Dr Ramasamy burst into the scene with more racial rhetorics, or more accurately, intra-racial rhetorics. Prof Ramasamy said that the DCM II post, which was created in 2008 in the aftermath of the Hindraf rally, was reserved for Malaysians of Indian Tamil orig...

Analysis of Selangor polls

Half of the 22 seats PN won in Selangor were by less than 5% margin By Hailey Chung and Kathy Fong / theedgemalaysia.com 13 Aug 2023, 01:46 am KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 13): Of the 22 state seats that Perikatan Nasional (PN) won in Selangor in the 2023 state polls, half of them were won by a margin of less than 5%. Four of them were secured with less than a 1% margin — the lowest being Taman Medan (0.07% or 30 votes), followed by Gombak Setia (0.09% or 58 votes), Sungai Kandis (0.28% or 167 votes) and Dengkil (0.59% or 407 votes). Among the 11 narrowly-clinched seats, seven were won by Bersatu and four by PAS. Six of the seats were straight fights. Selangor PN chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (PN-Bersatu), who obtained the Hulu Kelang seat, was also on a slim win. He attained a 1,617 majority or 3.26% winning margin over former Bukit Melawati assemblywoman Juwairiya Zulkifli (PH-PKR). Comparably, five seats won by Pakatan Harapan (PH-four seats) and Barisan Nasional (one ...

Back to status quo

DR.BAKRI MUSA ✅ Back to status quo Yesterday's six state elections confirmed what had been suspected and feared all along. That is, Malays are now deeply and dangerously polarised. This was gleaned earlier from reviewing the last 15th general election. While the just-completed elections did not change any state government, with last November's election Pakatan Harapan's victory in May 2018 was repeated. However, that was prematurely aborted by the conniving Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Then, the young and inexperienced Harapan leaders had a misplaced and unwarranted trust in the old man. They naively believed his claim that he was instrumental in toppling former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak. They forgot that it was Mahathir who was responsible for Najib's fast rise in politics in the first place. As could be anticipated, the ever-scheming Mahathir, together with his backdoor accomplices Muhyiddin Yassin and Azmin Ali, ended Harapan's short-lived governm...

A (still) divided electorate - Reflections on polls outcome: Part 2

https://www.malaysiakini.com/columns/675591 COLUMNS COMMENT | A (still) divided electorate - Reflections on polls outcome: Part 2 Bridget Welsh Published: Aug 14, 2023 12:59 PM ⋅ Updated: 12:59 PM COMMENT | Almost immediately after the election results, questions have turned to ethnic voting patterns. Ethnicity is deeply entrenched in the understanding and mobilisation of Malaysian politics. The six state elections results confirm a continued pattern of ethnic polarisation in Malaysia. In fact, the ethnic divide is deepening, making the challenge of governing a divided nation harder. Caveats and methodology This second piece on the state elections is a preliminary analysis of state election results by ethnic voting. ADS Of all the socio-economic factors illustrating differences in voting, ethnicity is the most important, accounting for around 40 percent of voting determined from the statistical method of factor analysis I conducted in GE15. This election, ...

The limits of PN

Very interesting review by YB Liew Chin Tong.. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 In the aftermath of the six state elections in Penang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, at a glance it seems that Perikatan Nasional has gained ground at the expense of Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional. But there is more than meets the eye. What Perikatan Nasional achieved on 12 August is as far as it can get. These are the realities on the ground: 𝟭. 𝗡𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗱-𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 It was unfortunate that the opposition PN had been questioning the legitimacy of the Unity Government despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's clear and solid parliamentary confidence support on 19 December 2022. PN's narrative up until the state elections was that if PH had lost Selangor, the collapse of the federal Unity Government would soon follow. A 3:3 verdict last night...
