Urgent Need for Coherent Reform in Higher Education -- G25 Malaysia

Urgent Need for Coherent Reform in Higher Education -- G25 Malaysia ____________________ Malaysia's higher education system is suffering from a structural crisis. The controversy over Edward Wong's case is not about one student or one race. It is about a system that is increasingly unfair, opaque and unsustainable. The Ministry of Higher Education's own data shows that enrolment of foreign students in our top five universities has grown at 20-30% a year since 2018, while local student numbers in some universities such as USM, UPM and UTM have declined. Public universities starved of sufficient funding from the government are relying on commercial and direct intake routes to survive. Senior university administrators admit privately that government allocations barely cover salaries, leaving them dependent on commercial-rate fee paying students, including foreigners, to meet the financial shortfall. This crisis hits Malaysians hardest. Subsidised UPU places are so l...

Police probe on UMANY is unlawful

Police probe on UMANY is unlawful, an abuse of power, a violation of free speech & prevents public discussion of education policy -- Lawyers for Liberty 17 September 2025 We refer to yesterday's news reports that the police are investigating the University Malaya Association of New Youths (UMANY) under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 over their statement calling for the abolishment of the matriculation system and only having STPM as the sole criterion for entry into public universities. The police in their statement cited the investigation as due to "the potential to create negative perceptions of the national education system, incite public dissatisfaction, and cause public anxiety." The statement by UMANY does not warrant a criminal investigation; the probe is high-handed, unlawful and an abuse of police powers. There is nothing wrong or criminal for anyone to participate in public discourse ...

PAS' PRESENT PERFECT STANCE

*PAS' PRESENT PERFECT STANCE: TAMIL AND MANDARIN IN NATIONAL SCHOOLS* Press statement by Kua Kia Soong, Former MP and director of SUARAM, 15 Sep 2025 On 10 October 1985, I wrote an article with the same title. It was about an important policy speech by then PAS Vice-President Haji Abdul Hadi Awang who declared that: "The question of privileges for the Malays will not arise under Islamic law." It immediately evoked the predictable response from UMNO that PAS was "traitorous to the religion, race and country...selling out the birthright of the Malays". The Prime Minister Dr Mahathir said the Attorney-General would have to determine if the speech was seditious. Even the Home Minister indicated that his Ministry was studying the speech. Not only was the Sedition Act invoked, some quarters maintained that Hadi's speech was tantamount to treason. The only voice of reason emanated from former Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn who said: "The Sedit...

Malaysia Day Message

Malaysia Day Message: Choose Togetherness, Reject Divisiveness By Thomas Fann 14 September 2025 This Malaysia Day, as we mark the union of our diverse peoples into one nation 62 years ago, we are called to reflect not only on our past but also on the path we are choosing for our future. The recent assassination of American conservative influencer Charlie Kirk reminded the world how deadly divisions can become. Though far away, Malaysia is not immune to the same "us versus them" mentality. Left unchecked, it can tear apart the very fabric of our society. A Warning Close to Home Political killings are rare in Malaysia, but violence is not absent. The syringe attack on Rafizi Ramli's young son, the firebombing of KK Mart outlets, the attack on MP Ngeh Koo Ham's home, the "red shirts" attacks on Bersih protesters, and the assault on the Ulu Tiram police station are sobering reminders that hatred can—and does—spill into violence. When leaders ...

Top STPM Students Left Behind UMANY: Extra University Seats Prioritized for Direct Intake Applicants UMANY stands in solidarity with Edward Wong Yi Xian, demanding that both the government and the University of Malaya immediately explain why Edward was denied admission into UM's Accounting programme through the UPU channel, and instead was only offered a place via Direct Intake. The very fact that Edward received a Direct Intake offer proves that he meets the qualifications for the programme. Yet, despite achieving a perfect 4.0 STPM result, he is now forced to pay tuition fees up to ten times higher than others in order to pursue the same course. UMANY further pointed out that despite the Madani government's three years in power, reforms to the university admissions system remain superficial, treating symptoms without addressing root causes, and have only made the process more complicated. As a result, cases of injustice involving outstanding STPM and matriculation stud...

Halal on the Plate

Halal on the Plate, Halal in the Nation -- Zaid Ibrahim Recently, I walked into a restaurant and asked for a fish dish. The waitress politely told me the place was not halal. I replied, "I only want fish." Yet she insisted; no halal certification, so very sorry no service. I could not help but reflect: before JAKIM turned halal certification into a billion-ringgit industry, Muslims in this country already knew what was halal. My father, my grandfather, and generations before them decided for themselves what was permissible to eat. We trusted our knowledge, our community, and our conscience. Today, however, Muslims are told that unless a government body issues a stamp, the food is questionable. Halal has become less about faith and more about bureaucracy. This raises a deeper question: if JAKIM decides what is halal to eat, can it also tell us where it is halal to sleep? Is the country itself halal when our environment is dirty, when illegal activities are rampant, and whe...
