The Chief Justice’s Speech: A Timely Reminder to All Malaysians

*The Chief Justice's Speech: A Timely Reminder to All Malaysians* _"Being a Judge is a tireless, thankless, and a challenging profession. No matter which way you decide, there will always be at least one disgruntled party. You are constantly under watch and scrutiny not only from the litigants that seek justice before you but from the entire public that remunerates you and trust that you will set aside your own persona, your own ideals, and your own personal biases in favour of something much larger that you: the Constitution and the law."_ _Speech of the Chief Justice of Malaysia at the_ _Opening of the Legal Year (8 January 2025)_ Constitutionalism and the Independence of the Judiciary took centre stage in the speech of The Right Honourable the Chief Justice of Malaysia, Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat ("Chief Justice") at the Opening of the Legal Year on 8 January 2025. A little history and a little nostalgia, delivered with cold, hard truths, ...

Should AI convert to Islam ?

https://thediplomat.com/2025/01/should-ai-convert-to-islam/ ... Anwar Ibrahim's suggestion raises fundamental questions about the dangers of imbuing artificial intelligence with religious or ideological dogma – even more so as Malaysia is slowly increasing its control over the media and tightening censorship on the pretext of social harmony. Police warning to public against joining anti-graft rally on January 25

Police warning to public against joining anti-graft rally on January 25 is an act of intimidation and is contrary to Peaceful Assembly Act 22 January 2025 We refer to the media statement released by PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) yesterday urging the people to not participate in the upcoming anti-graft rally that will be held this Saturday. The police have no power to declare an assembly unlawful; the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 ("PAA") only requires a notice be given and this duty is only imposed to the organisers. Even if there is non-compliance with regards to the notice, this does not affect the right of anyone who would want to peacefully assemble. In any event, the PAA was fully complied with by the Secretariat. Permission from owner or occupier of premises does not arise as the rally will be held in public places. Dataran Merdeka and the road in front of Sogo would fall under the definition of "public place" under Section 3 of the PAA. PDRM and Home...

UM KK Mart vandalised with red paint

Image
【UM KK MART BEING VANDALISED WITH RED PAINT... UMANY: EXTREME ACTIONS THREATEN SOCIAL HARMONY】 Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (UMANY) condemns the act of vandalism where red paint was splashed on the doors of KK Mart located at Kompleks Perdana Siswa (KPS) in Universiti Malaya (UM). UMANY also urges the university administration to conduct a transparent investigation and promptly address public concerns. The KK Mart at UM's KPS was vandalized with red paint by unidentified individuals. This incident inevitably brings to mind the recent controversy surrounding KK Mart due to the "ham and cheese sandwich" incident. While it remains unclear whether this act of vandalism is related to that controversy, UMANY President Lim Jing Jet emphasized that if anyone wishes to protest against KK Mart, such extreme actions are not an appropriate means of expression. Vandalizing property may seem minor but could still fall under the offense of destruction of property a...

From the retiring Chief Justice

What a great lady. Will be sorely missed... -- Tengku Maimun cited the Indira Gandhi case as one she still reflects on, asserting that authorities allegedly failed to enforce court rulings in Indira's favour due to the mistaken belief that Islam requires special protection. "I suspect the order (by) the civil court (on) the mandamus order, the custody order (and) whatever else was issued by the civil court was not enforced by the authorities (and) the powers that be because of the misconception that we need to protect Islam," Tengku Maimun, who is slated to retire in July, said. https://www.scoop.my/news/244490/very-hurtful-chief-justice-exposes-legal-failures-driven-by-distorted-islamic-views/ Sent from my iPhone

Malaysia’s rights backslide

MALAYSIA: RIGHTS BACKSLIDE UNDER PRIME MINISTER ANWAR IBRAHIM < Reform Promises Abandoned; Censorship Powers Expand > BANGKOK – The Malaysian government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has backtracked on commitments to reform vague and overbroad laws, and instead sought to expand repressive powers during 2024 to criminalize speech, Human Rights Watch said today in its World Report 2025. For the 546-page world report, in its 35th edition, Human Rights Watch reviewed human rights practices in more than 100 countries. In much of the world, Executive Director Tirana Hassan writes in her introductory essay, governments cracked down and wrongfully arrested and imprisoned political opponents, activists, and journalists. Armed groups and government forces unlawfully killed civilians, drove many from their homes, and blocked access to humanitarian aid. In many of the more than 70 national elections in 2024, authoritarian leaders gained ground with their discriminatory rhetoric a...

A beautiful message to all Malaysians !

Friends, I'd like to share the following lovely posting about a basic principle which resonates with how most Malaysians really are, and what WE are as well. What she says is that regardless of who we are, including what race and religion we belong to, we need to focus on and celebrate the common fact that we are kind to one another AND that we should not allow certain parties to divide us because of the differences within our diversity. May almighty God bless this wonderful Malaysian ! https://vimeo.com/1044037806 Sent from my iPhone

Unity in Diversity

*Unity in Diversity: The Critical Role of Tolerance in Combating Religious Extremism in Malaysia* As a secular state, Malaysia must actively promote tolerance, understanding, and open dialogue to cultivate a harmonious society where diverse beliefs coexist peacefully. Extremist ideologies often lead to violence, sectarian conflicts, and civil unrest, resulting in tragic loss of life and social instability, as exemplified by the events of May 13, 1969. These extremist beliefs can fracture social bonds, making cooperation and mutual understanding within communities increasingly difficult. It is imperative to recognize the potential of these ideologies to undermine the very fabric of our Malaysian society. Fortunately, in Sabah, we have largely resisted the incursion of religious extremism. We take pride in our unwavering commitment to tolerance and respect for individual beliefs, principles we will fiercely defend. This peaceful coexistence is not only a cultural asset; it is al...
