Religious Extremism on the Rise in Malaysia.

Sanusi drunk on racial extremism, hits back Ramasamy

KEDAH Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor is drunk on racial and religious extremism, and shows immaturity with his toddy-drinking analogy aimed at Hindu critics, said Penang Deputy Chief Minister P. Ramasamy today.

Ramasamy also warned Sanusi that he can be similarly ousted from his post, alluding to Ahmad Faizal Azumu's ejection from the menteri besar's position in Perak yesterday.

"I would like to advise Sanusi not to play with fire by destroying Hindu temples and places of worship in the name of their illegality," said Ramasamy in a statement.

In continuing their war of words, Ramasamy also attacked Sanusi for using a toddy-drinking analogy over the criticism against the temple demolition is the PAS-ruled state.

"He mischievously remarked that we were drunk on the popularity of toddy, in inciting religious tensions among Indians in the state.

"He added that we, by merely drinking one bottle of toddy, pretend as though we have drunk two bottles.

"Sanusi's use of the toddy drinking analogy to describe the actions of the MIC and DAP leaders is not something expected from a menteri besar.

"The very fact that he could sink to this level tells us much about his calibre, quality and competency of leadership," said the DAP leader, adding that, while political and ideological differences were expected from leaders, comments about opposition leaders getting drunk and inciting ethnic or religious tensions were not.

"If Indians are associated with toddy drinking then it is not too much for me to say that Sanusi is high on ganja and heroin in going after Hindu places of worship mercilessly," he said.

Ramasamy also said that he need not get high on anything to take up the religious and cultural rights of Indians.

"I am defending the rights of my community against those like Sanusi who are drunk on racial and religious extremism."

In a statement previously, Sanusi had hit back at his critics over the state's recent demolition of the Sri Madurai Veeran Hindu temple in Alor Star by accusing them of fanning racial and religious sentiments over the demolition.

He also slammed them for being incoherent and drunk, urging them not to appear "drunk on two to three bottles after only consuming one", adding they were "drunk on the toddy of popularity" and desired to become "champions of race".

The issue started when Sanusi justified the demolition of the temple for being built on land without permission and had, as such, "broken the law".

He also called for MIC – an ally in the ruling Perikatan Nasional coalition – to be outlawed for criticising the demolition, resulting in strong reactions from MIC leaders, including its president S.A. Vigneswaran and deputy M. Saravanan.

Meanwhile, Ramasamy had described Sanusi as a liability and a burden to the Kedah government, and should be removed from his post.

Sanusi also came under attack from a Penang rep over his drunk-on-toddy remark.

Satees Muniandy, the state rep for Bagan Dalam, said Sanusi was showing off his racism and religious extremism to cover up his weakness as a leader.

"Non-Muslim places of worships are being targeted by the Kedah government to sway the public attention from numerous issues that plaguing the state administration," he said in a statement today.

"The Kedah MB has arrogantly labelled anyone who spoke against him as 'drunken with toddy'. The one who is drunk with power is the Kedah MB himself."

Meanwhile, former unity minister P. Waytha Moorthy urged the ministry he once led to advise and reprimand Sanusi for his racist remarks.

"The racist slur does not bode well in a multiracial and multicultural society.

"The menteri besar should address the real issue of his failure to allocate for freedom of religion by providing land for Hindu temples or alternatives rather than turning it into a racist attack on Hindus," said Waytha, who is now the president of Malaysian Advancement Party.
